John and I had a great mini vacation at the US West Coast. The Yosemite National Park was one of our stops, Amazing Nature! One of the inhabitants are bears :-) But we did not see one (maybe better :-)

And now for my English friends the translation of this very special story! ++ Message in the bottle does not know borders ++ Last weekend, John and I met my message in the bottle friend Lore! June 1982, Lore found my message in the bottle at Ahrenshoop on the Darß. It was the beginning of a very special friendship! I was 10 years old when I tossed my message in the bottle in the Baltic See when sailing with my parents and sisters in Denmark. Lore was on holiday at Ahrenshoop on the Darß. Walking along the beach she spotted the bottle. It was a rainy day and guards were on the watching tower of the German Democratic Republic [GDR], recalls Lore. The Danish border was not far away from the border of the GDR. Many attempts to escape were done, some successful, unfortunately most failed. Air mattresses were forbidden as too many attempts to escape were done using air mattresses… and they are only kid toys… After picking up the bottle, Lore was tensed the next few days. ‘Did they watch me picking up the message in the bottle?’, she was full of fears and concerns, control of the Stasi were normal and fear of repressions high. Middle of the 1980’s Lore applied to leave the country, which was granted to her in the year 1986. At the age of 52 years, Lore was allowed to move to a free life with only what she could carry: 4 suitcases! She had to leave her grown-up son in Berlin! Nobody expected that they could unite again only three years later! A real friendship developed. We have known us now for 32 years, with normal mail, later Email, we kept in contact. Mid 90s we met for the first time in person! A precious friendship that no border could stop! Thanks, Lore!

** Flaschenpost kennt keine Grenzen ** John und ich haben am Wochenende meine Flaschenpostfreundin Lore getroffen! Im Juni 1982 hat Lore meine Flaschenpost bei Ahrenshoop auf dem Darß gefunden. Es war der Beginn einer ganz besonderen Freundschaft! Ich war 10 Jahre alt und habe bei einem unseren Segeltörns mit meinen Eltern und Schwestern auf der Ostsee in Dänemark eine Flaschenpost in das Wasser geworfen. Lore hatte wie so oft Urlaub in Ahrenshoop auf dem Darß gemacht. Bei einem Spaziergang entlang des Strandes entdeckt sie die Flasche auf dem Sand am Strand. Es war ein grauer regnerischer Tag und Wachleute standen auf dem Wachturm der DDR, so Lore. Die dänische Grenze war nicht weit von der DDR Grenze entfernt. Viele Fluchtversuche wurden von hier aus begangen, einige erfolgreich, viele leider nicht. Luftmatratzen waren hier bereits verboten...zu viele Fluchtversuche mit Luftmatrazen, die eigentlich ja nur Kinderspielzeug sind.... Lore war tagelang angespannt: 'haben sie mich gesehen , dass ich die Flasche vom Strandboden aufgehoben habe?', waren ihre Ängste. Beobachtungen und Kontrolle der Stasi waren normal und die Angst vor Repressalien groß. Doch dem war nicht so. Lore hatte Mitte der 80er Jahre einen Ausreiseanttrag gestellt, der im Jahr 1986 bewilligt wurde. Im Alter von 52 Jahren durfte Lore in die Freiheit übersiedeln, mit nur was sie tragen konnte, 4 Koffer! Ihren erwachsenen Sohn musste sie in Berlin lassen. Wer hätte gedacht, dass sie sich nur drei Jahre später in die Arme schliessen konnten! Eine echte Freundschaft ist entstanden. 32 Jahre sind wir nun in Kontakt, zunächst mit normalen Briefen, später Email haben wir unsere Leben verfolgt - begleitet. Mitte der Neunziger Jahre haben Lore und ich uns das erste Mal in die Armen geschlossen! Eine sehr wervolle Freundschaft, die die Mauer überwunden hat! Danke, Lore!
